Governance

Collaborative & Community-led Accountability

The Waterloo Region Community Safety and Wellbeing Plan is overseen by a collaborative steering committee with representation from diverse organizations, sectors, and communities.
Supporting governance and implementation are a number of advisory committees (breaking down silos and barriers), working groups (facilitating and coordinating), and action tables (outcome-oriented community experts and boots on the ground).
Regional Council, on behalf of all municipalities in Waterloo Region, is legislatively required to develop and adopt community safety and well-being plans working in partnership with a multi-sectoral advisory committee comprised of representation from the police service board and other local service providers in health/mental health, education, community/social services and children/youth services.
Additional requirements are also outlined in legislation pertaining to conducting consultations, contents of the plan, and monitoring, evaluating, reporting and publishing the plan.
Three committees were created to provide
foundational guidance to develop the Framework.
These committees brought together local leaders, youth, municipalities, and community organizations focused on wellbeing. Along with these groups, we engaged different communities in Waterloo Region to listen to their priorities and needs to feel safe. These committees continue to provide oversight and support as we implement the plan.
