Addressing Mental Health and Addictions Needs, Together

Priority Icons with Mental Health highlighted

The CSWP recognizes that equitable, accessible, and trauma informed mental health services are at the core of system action to support safe and well communities.  Residents and partners have identified the need for new service and response models to better support residents experiencing mental health and addictions issues.

Current Initiatives

Community Based Upstream Programs

By focusing on taking action and centering community voices, we are creating a Waterloo Region where everyone knows they are welcome and valued. Three cohorts have received funding to date.

Alternate Destination Clinic

A model of care that enables low barrier, immediate access to Mental Health and Addictions crisis services, and supports police and paramedic service to transport to a community based Mental Health and Addictions clinic rather than an emergency room. The Integrated Crisis Centre (ICC) in Kitchener is the first clinic to open in Waterloo Region.

Integrated Neighbourhood Care Teams

A new priority neighbourhood-based model with integrated health care teams wrapping around residents most frequently accessing emergency services.

Call Diversion (CMHA)

Mental Health Nurses identifying calls for mental health support, reducing the need for a police response.

Building Safer Communities

This project supports community partners to improve safety and wellbeing through investing in culturally appropriate mental health and addiction prevention activities, and working with community to co-design a MHA crisis response model for First Nations, Metis, Inuit, African, Caribbean, and Black youth.

IMPACT (Integrated Mobile Police and Crisis Team )

A collaborative initiative between the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) and the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The program pairs specially trained police officers with mental health nurses to respond to mental health crises in the community.

HART (Homelessness, and Addictions Recovery Treatment) Hubs

With the announcement from the Provincial Government about closing the Kitchener CTS site, community partners have been working to bring forward an application for a HART Hub in Waterloo Region.
